Megson blasts inaccurate reports
Gary Megson has blasted reports that appeared in the national press, which claimed he was poised to walk out on the Baggies. Megson was linked with the vacant managerial hotseats at Derby County and Aston Villa, but he has categorically denied the claims that he is set to dump the first division promotion challengers in favour of a switch to the big time. "What was reported in the Daily Mirror is totally and utterly untrue," Megson told the club's official website. "It's not even a misquote - it's just somebody causing trouble. "I have absolutely no intention of walking out. If I was like that, I could have walked out three times since I've been at West Brom - but each time I've chosen to stay." Meanwhile, Albion chairman Paul Thompson has played down talk of a rift with Megson. Thompson penned an article in Saturday's matchday programme setting out his visions for the future of the football club which called into question the scouting system currently in place at The Hawthorns. "I have never had a wrong word with Gary Megson," he said. "There has certainly been no fall out, nor is there any rift. I think he is an excellent football manager. "The comments I made in the programme were more about the industry in general than a particular situation."

Baggies 1 - 0 Birmingham City >> Match report
(30/10/01)

Albion underlined their reputation as the First Division's Mean Machine by collecting their 17th clean sheet of the season to move into third place. A 42nd minute strike from forward Jason Roberts earned Albion their 11th 1-0 win of the campaign and ensured that injury and suspension hit Birmingham are still searching for their first win of the year.

Uwe Rosler on loan
(30/10/01)

Uwe Rosler
.WEST BROM have signed Southampton striker Uwe Rosler on loan. Rosler has made just five appearances for Saints this season, and in 29 outings for them in all, he has netted just once. The 32-year-old German is set to make his Albion debut at Crystal Palace on Wednesday night. Manager Gary Megson has found himself requiring cover for top scorer Scott Dobie, who was injured against Wolves last week. Rosler stamped his pedigree in England between 1994-98 when he hit 50 goals in 150 games for Manchester City. Meanwhile, there is less positive news for Albion regarding another striker. They have been unable to agree either a fee with Sunderland for Danny Dichio or personal terms with the player, who impressed on loan earlier this season (two strikes in 3 games). The Baggies recently increased their original offer of £750,000 to counteract what they claimed was the Premiership club's asking price of around £1million. But after further discussions, chairman Paul Thompson said: "I have spoken to Sunderland chairman Bob Murray and, as a result of that conversation, it is not possible for West Bromwich Albion to sign Danny Dichio. "The price has gone up again from what we believed was acceptable to Sunderland and therefore we will not be signing the player." He added: "We discussed wages with Danny's representative and, based on that discussion, it is not possible for us to agree terms with the player."

Baggies 1 - 0 Leicester City >>FA Cup Match report
(26/1/02)

Neil Clement converted a hotly-disputed penalty (but we'll take it) to earn West Brom their second Premiership scalp and a place in the last 16 of the FA Cup with a 1-0 win. Clement fired home the spot-kick after Leicester skipper Matt Elliott was adjudged by referee Clive Wilkes to have brought down Andy Johnson after he burst into the area.

West Brom 1 v 1 Wolves
(25/10/01)

Neil Clement, who was watched by Blackburn Rovers, rescued a point for West Brom in a highly charged local derby at the Hawthorns with a dramatic second half equaliser scored direct from a free-kick.
High-flying Wolves were looking for their sixth successive win but in the end they had to hang on grimly for a point, which took them to the top of the First Division.

Roberts has card rescinded
(24/1/02)

Jason Roberts has seen a yellow card received in the local derby with Walsall rescinded by match official John Brandwood. After reviewing the incident on video the Staffordshire-based official has had a change of heart over a perceived diving incident in last Sunday's clash at The Hawthorns. "Mr Brandwood has reviewed the video and the FA has accepted his recommendations that the caution be not recorded," secretary John Evans told the club's official website. "He was willing to be honest without being pressed by the club to review his decision - which speaks volumes for him. "It is exactly how the system should work. We shouldn't have to rely on clubs pursuing referees or running media campaigns for things to be reviewed."

Dobie bags brace for reserves
(22/1/02)

Scott Dobie scored twice in last night's 4-1 reserves win over Bury to stake his claim for a recall to the first team. Bury took the lead in the first minute when a punch out from keeper Brian Jensen fell to Martyn Forrest and he lobbed the ball into the empty Albion net from 20 yards. But Dobie equalised with a fine volley just two minutes later and he was on the mark again five minutes later when he connected well from a through-ball from Adam Chambers. Warren Cummings made it 3-1 before Bury's Nicky Hill put past his own goalkeeper to complete the emphatic scoreline.

Albion 1 - 0 Walsall >> Match Report
(20/1/02)

Jason Roberts scored the only goal as Albion defeated local-rivals Walsall - The 23-year-old striker celebrated his goal by taking off his shirt to reveal a T-shirt paying tribute to West Brom legend Jeff Astle. Roberts was on target four minutes before the break as The Baggies saw off The Saddlers

Jeff Astle - The King - R.I.P.
(20/1/02)

Baggies legend Jeff Astle has died aged 59 after collapsing suddenly at his daughter's home last night. The former England international had an illustrious playing career, capped when he appeared at the Mexico World Cup in 1970. He also scored in every round when The Baggies won the FA Cup in 1968. Astle, who hit the back of the net 137 times in 292 appearances at The Hawthorns, won five caps for England but failed to make the scoresheet. The cause of death is not yet known, but Staffordshire Police have confirmed they are not treating it as suspicious.

Megson's unchanged side
(19/1/02)

Gary Megson is set to name an unchanged side for tomorrow's derby clash with Walsall after Larus Sigurdsson recovered from a groin injury. The Icelandic centre-half has responded to treatment after resting for a couple of days and is expected to be fit for the visit of their First Division rivals. Darren Moore is likely to line up in defence, despite the 27-year-old needing surgery on a hernia problem.

McInnes targets top two
(18/1/02)

Derek McInnes feels Albion are still in with a good chance of snatching an automatic promotion spot, but knows they must put a good run together. The Hawthorns outfit have tasted success just once in their last six league outings - the convincing 4-0 win over struggling Stockport County. But McInnes says three points off neighbouring Walsall this weekend could give them the lift-off they need to mount a determined challenge for one of the top two places. "This division is still as tight as ever and there are a lot of games to go," said the former Rangers and Toulouse midfielder. "I have no doubts whatsoever that West Brom are still firmly in the race for the Premiership, but we need to put a good run of results together and we need to be positive." Albion currently sit in sixth spot in the table with 48 points in the bank from their 29 league games and they are now seven points adrift of Manchester City and Wolves who are leading the pack.

MEGSON COULD AXE STRIKE DUO
(17/1/02)

Gary Megson has warned strike pair Jason Roberts and Daniel Dichio: "Misfire again and you're out." The no-nonsense Baggies boss has made it clear to the goal-shy duo that if they continue to draw blanks they will be axed. Roberts has netted once in five starts since recovering from a refractured foot while Dichio has bagged just two goals in 10 games since arriving from Sunderland. "This will be their last chance," said Megson. "If they're not scoring, they won't play. I dropped Jason Roberts last season for six games and put Bob Taylor in who is 34 and cost £90,000. "It doesn't matter to me who plays as long as we're winning games. But it's not working at the moment - it's misfiring. Megson added: "We've got the best defensive record in the division and arguably the country if everybody had played the same amount of games. "What we now need is for the people at the other end to start doing their jobs."

WBA table new deals
(16/1/02)

West Brom have opened contract talks with Larus Sigurdsson, Tony Butler, Adam Chambers and Des Lyttle. The quartet are the first to be offered new contracts as the Baggies' board begins planning for next season. Nine Albion players are out of contract at the end of the current season and the club are keen to tie several players on new contracts. "We have opened talks with the players' representatives which is part of an ongoing process," chairman Paul Thompson told the club's official website.

Appleton on recovery road
(14/1/02)

Michael Appleton says surgeons are pleased with the progress he is making from his major knee surgery. But Appleton says all is going to plan and he could be rid of his leg brace in around six weeks' time, when he will start the long job of building up the strength in the weakened limb. "Hopefully soon I will be back on the exercise bike," he said. "I am walking a lot on the treadmill - mainly on an uphill gradient. "But, touch wood, in about five weeks I will be stepping up my rehabilitation programme and begin work with the physios. It's going to be a long process but I am very positive."

Grimsby 0 - 0 WBA >>Match report
(12/1/02)

Albion are back in the play-off spots tonight, above local rivals Birmingham, after a hard-fought goalless draw at Grimsby. They were indebted to a couple of fine saves from keeper Russell Hoult as Grimsby, currently enjoying a mini-revival, threatened to take all three points. Gary Megson made one switch after seeing his side win 2-1 at Sunderland in the FA Cup last weekend. Igor Balis came in for Des Lyttle, who dropped to the bench. .

Pilgrims sign Baggies keeper
(11/1/02)

Plymouth Argyle boss Paul Sturrock has solved his goalkeeping crisis by signing West Brom's Chris Adamson on a month's loan. The Nationwide Division Three leaders had been keen to sign a replacement keeper after Luke McCormick picked up a thigh injury last week. Adamson is expected to be named as a substitute for Saturday's crucial clash against Hull City with Romain Larrieu starting the game in goal. Adamson is the third choice keeper at the Hawthorns behind Russell Hoult and Brian Jensen but he has played 12 League games for the Baggies. The 23-year-old keeper has also spent brief periods on loan at Mansfield Town and Halifax Town. .

FA Cup 4th round draw
(6/1/02)

Nationwide League Division 1
West Bromwich Albion have been drawn at home against the Premiership strugglers Leicester City in this years 4th round of the FA Cup following the baggies well deserved victory against Premiership opponents, Sunderland at The Stadium of Light yesterday.

Megson's cup joy
(6/1/02)

Nationwide League Division 1
Gary Megson has said: "I think we did deserve it on the amount of chances that we had. "They had a lot of possession but did not really make the goalkeeper make too many saves. "We've scored twice and hit the post and the bar in the first half so it's not all about possession." Megson praised the contribution of Roberts who, despite not scoring, earned the penalty and set up the winner. "All the players are doing what we brought them into the club to do," Megson added. "Jason has been brought to get behind defences and use his pace, use his ability on the ball, and when he does that he really takes some handling. "At times he looked unstoppable."

Quinn returns to West Brom
(4/1/02)

Nationwide League Division 1
James Quinn has moved back to West Bromwich Albion after his move to Notts County fell through. The Magpies were keen to seal a permanent deal for the striker after he enjoyed a successful loan spell at Meadow Lane, scoring three times. But the move has fallen through as County are believed to be unable to meet the Baggies' £100,000 asking price for Quinn. The Northern Ireland international is now back in training with Gary Megson's first-team squad, although Notts County hope the deal can be resurrected.

Notts County James Quinn deadline
(3/1/02)

Nationwide League Division 1
West Brom have handed Notts County a deadline of January 14 to sign striker James Quinn. County manager Gary Brazil is keen to secure the forward permanently after seeing him score three goals in seven games since leaving the Hawthorns on a month's loan. Baggies boss Gary Megson agreed to let Quinn extend his loan deal by an extra month provided that the Second Division side agree to sign the player for £100,000. Quinn has fallen further down the striking order at West Brom following the arrival of Danny Dichio from Sunderland. West Brom chief executive John Wile said: 'Notts County have said they would like to sign James and we have said they can. 'We have agreed to let him go on loan for another month providing they agree terms with James and sign him by the 14th, otherwise he will be coming back.' .

Albion 4 - 0 Stockport >> Match report
(1/1/02)

Nationwide League Division 1
West Brom ran rings round struggling Stockport, winning 4-0. Danny Dichio grabbed a brace, with Jason Roberts and Andy Johnson also getting on the scoresheet.

Larus Sigurdsson returns
(1/1/02)

Nationwide League Division 1
Larus Sigurdsson returns to the squad for the clash with Stockport today, while Phil Gilchrist could also return following an eye injury. Gary Megson is demanding three points from his promotion chasers when the struggling Edgeley Park side visit The Hawthorns for the first game of the New Year. Albion have not tasted success over the holiday period with three draws and a defeat in their last four league outings. But Megson insists they have got to put things back in order when former Albion favourite Carlton Palmer brings his troops, beaten in their last eight games, to the West Midlands. Megson is hoping he can add defender Gilchrist to his squad once again after missing two games with an eye injury - picked up when he was caught in the face by Trond-Egil Solvedt. Sigurdsson will be back in the squad after serving his one-match suspension last weekend when we lost to Gillingham. West Brom (probable): Hoult; Balis, Moore, Sigurdsson, Gilchrist, Clement; Johnson, McInnes, Jordao; Roberts, Dichio.
